When a cavity appears as a result of caries, it is necessary to have it filled as soon as possible. The dentist cleans the cavity and fills it with a special material, which restores both the function and the aesthetic view of the tooth. If the cavity is not filled in time, it becomes bigger and the patient gets a toothache. If still nothing is done, the tooth may have to be extracted.
In modern dentistry all treatment procedures related to fillings and bonding are performed paying great attention to aesthetics, no matter whether front teeth or less visible molar ones are being treated.
Cosmetic bonding may be used for the following conditions:
Prior to a great number of dental procedures, caries being not an exception, diagnostics must be carried out first. In the clinic Dental Harmony there are all the necessary diagnostic tools that help to choose the most suitable and effective treatment. While examining and treating decayed teeth, dentists at Dental Harmony may use an intraoral camera, the CarieScan, a microscope, dental or panoramic X-ray images. If needed, anaesthesia is administered first. After having removed the decayed dental tissues, the dental cavity is prepared for a filling. Based on the natural tooth anatomy, the filling or bonding material is applied to the tooth surface in layers. Nowadays the colour of restorative material is chosen individually and restorations are invisible to the naked eye. As a result, the restored teeth may not be distinguished from the natural ones.
Only your dentist can offer the best solution which would meet the 2 most important criteria, that is of functionality and aesthetics. During the visit the dentist can provide the patient with information regarding different types of fillings and explain which kind of filling and why will be the most appropriate in this particular case and why.
In order to keep the surfaces of fillings and bonded teeth in the same condition (beautiful and strong) it is important to look after them properly. Although all the natural functions and appearance of teeth have been restored, bonded teeth and fillings tend to wear off faster. Besides, if no proper oral care is taken, teeth can lose their gloss and dental plaque tends to accumulate faster as well. Therefore, it is important to follow good oral hygiene practices. A professional oral hygiene procedure is recommended at least once or twice per year depending on the patient’s oral condition. If needed, during the procedure, the bonded surfaces or fillings are polished in order to prolong their longevity.
